45th Columbia Burton Accounting Conference - Paper Submission

The 45th Burton Accounting conference will be held at the Columbia Business School on November 6-7, 2026. Since 1981, the Accounting Division at Columbia Business School has hosted the annual Burton Conference in honor of Professor Sandy Burton who served as the Chief Accountant at the SEC, the Deputy Mayor of Finance in New York and as the dean of Columbia Business School. Prof. Burton earned considerable respect for attempting to bridge the gap between accounting practice and academia. In keeping with that spirit, the conference aims to assemble an accomplished group of scholars and practitioners to discuss new research findings, ideas, methodologies and trends.

The 45th Burton Accounting conference is open to submissions. The conference welcomes rigorous and innovative manuscripts on important issues concerning all areas of accounting. The selected papers will be discussed by leaders in the field.

TOPICS: Theoretical, empirical, and experimental studies that advance our understanding of topics in accounting.

New York: Scaling AI Beyond Silos: Best Practices for Ecosystem AI Adoption and ROI

McKinsey notes that many executives struggle to realize meaningful ROI when AI remains confined within organizational silos. As artificial intelligence becomes a board-level priority, leadership teams face critical questions: when a pilot shows promise, what must happen next to scale it across the organization? And how can decision makers ensure that AI investments deliver measurable outcomes rather than becoming isolated?

This executive session addresses those challenges from both the Subject Matter Expert (SME) and AI Scientist perspectives, the two roles most responsible for turning AI experimentation into real operational impact. Rather than discussing AI in theory, participants will work through a practical exercise: selecting a real AI use case and transforming it into a scalable blueprint with clear ROI pathways, adoption strategies, enterprise AI governance frameworks, and execution milestones.

Join Deepak Mittal, Founder & CEO, NextGen Invent Corp., Board Member, CBS Alumni Club of New York, for an interactive executive discussion designed to help leadership teams Scale AI with clarity, discipline, and measurable business impact. Participants will gain practical frameworks to build scalable AI capabilities that drive operational efficiency, innovation, and long-term enterprise value.

Date: Tuesday, June 23, 2026
Time: 12:00 NOON - 1:00 pm
Location: Zoom. The access link will be provided 24 hours in advance. And again 30 minutes in advance. A recording will be sent to all those who are registered within a day or two of the event.
Fee: $15 CBS Alumni Club of NY members; $25 non members

You may register here.
For any further inquiries, please contact info@cbsacny.org.

Using AI for Academic Research - CBS Workshop Workshop by Professors Jesse Schreger and Malek Ben Sliman

Following in the footsteps of a very successful workshop on accelerating academic research with AI by Santiago Balsiero and a couple of his colleagues at Google (recording and slides will follow soon), we are planning a series of additional workshops on using AI for academic research in the summer and fall.

Our next workshop is a two-session workshop led by, our very own, Professors Jesse Schreger and Malek Ben Sliman. The first session (June 24) will focus on an introduction to AI tools for academic research (with an emphasis on Claude). The second session (July 27) will build on the first session and will serve as a hands-on workshop where faculty and doctoral students can bring their own research ideas and data sources to advance their research project, with guidance, during the workshop (see details below). We will record this two-session workshop and possibly repeat it in the fall, if there is sufficient demand, for those who missed it over the summer.

Looking forward to seeing over the summer in these workshops,

AIB and VDR

Session 1 – Introduction to Using AI Tools For Academic Research – June 24 2:00-4:00pm

Summary: In this session, we will cover installing and configuring Claude Code, the different ways to work with it (terminal, IDE integration, GUID), pricing and Columbia's access, model selection, and the key operating modes (plan, accept edits, auto, skip-permissions). We'll address data sharing and privacy concerns. We will demonstrate how to integrate Claude Code to your workflow across different programming languages (i.e. R, Stata, Python). We will also discuss version control and how to utilize git with Claude.

In addition, we will provide suggested “assignments” for coming prepared with your own data to execute your own research in the second session.

Takeaways: The goal is to walk out with Claude Code installed and integrated into a research workflow alongside existing tools (Stata, R, Python), with a clear sense of how to start using it for one’s own research.

Who is this for: this session is primarily designed for faculty who haven't yet integrated Claude Code into their day-to-day. Heavier users are welcome but might find session 2 more useful. Those who skip this introductory session should make sure they are prepared to participate in the second session.

Session 2 – Using AI in Your Research – July 27th 11:00am-4:00pm

Summary: In this session, faculty will execute their own research in real-time using AI tools. Participants will share their ongoing progress and challenges with the group throughout the session. The goal is to see how close to a real research result participants can get during this extended workshop.

In addition, this session will introduce more advanced ways to Claude Code in research. Specifically, we will discuss how to extend Claude Code with MCPs, subagents, skills, plugins and API calls. We will help participants learn to work remotely and collectively using Claude Code (e.g., remote control, Claude in the Grid, tmux/zellij/cmux). This is an interactive workshop and time will be provided to help troubleshoot any issue one might encounter.

Takeaways: The goal is to leave the workshop knowing how to produce original academic research with an agent-based workflow. Ideally, some of you will even have a new result to build on for a full academic paper.

Who is this for: Anyone interested in using AI for research. We hope that advanced users also attend to share their workflow and discuss research methods with their colleagues.

New York: Ask for More: Strategic Negotiation for Financial Professionals with Prof. Alex Carter

Negotiation is so much more than deal-making. It’s business development. It’s client relations. It’s story-telling. It’s risk mitigation. It’s collaboration. It’s human capital management.

Only 7% of people know the secret to negotiating at an expert level - but mastering it is simpler than many people think! In this innovative, interactive talk, participants of all seniority levels will learn how to improve their negotiation abilities, including not just ways to make deals, but how to nail the messages that land those great deals. Straight from the pages of Alex’s Wall Street Journal bestselling book, Ask for More: 10 Questions to Negotiate Anything, participants learn how to ask powerful diagnostic questions, adjust their word choices to increase the odds of a “yes,” and then “land the plane” for the greatest effect. The results? Quantum-leap results in their personal and professional lives.

Alexandra Carter is the Everett B. Birch Innovative Teaching Clinical Professor of Law and the Director of the Mediation Clinic at Columbia Law School. In 2019, Professor Carter was awarded the Columbia University Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching, Columbia’s highest teaching honor. Her first book, Ask For More: Ten Questions to Negotiate Anything, was published by Simon & Schuster in May 2020 and became an instant Wall Street Journal Business bestseller, the first negotiation book solo-authored by a woman to make that list.

Date: Wednesday, June 24, 2026
Time: 6:00 - 8:00 pm
Location: The Spiral Building at Hudson Yards, 66 Hudson Blvd. East, NYC
Fee: $25 CBS Alumni Club of NY members; $35 non members and guests

You may register here.
For any further inquiries, please contact Contactus@cbsacny.org.

Using AI For Academic Research - CBS Workshop by Professors Jesse Schreger and Malek Ben Sliman
