Event Details
Using medical claims data from Maine, I estimate the effect of price transparency on price outcomes. I identify a quasi-experiment in which a subset of procedures is disclosed on Maine’s HealthCost website. I find that disclosed procedures have lower price variation across insurance companies after the implementation of the website. Furthermore, I find that this is associated with an increase in average prices. An increase in prices is consistent with hospitals and insurance companies using website price information to adjust prices. Overall, the paper provides evidence concerning the effects of transparency within a large segment of the U.S. economy. This paper is of particular relevance to researchers in accounting who are interested in the consequences of transparency regulation.
