Event Details

Gerald L. Curtis, Burgess Professor of Political Science at Columbia University, assessed the recent election in the Japanese Lower House and subsequent political developments. What factors account for the huge surge in LDP support?  What are the policy priorities of the Abe Administration, and what is the likelihood that he will be able to realize his goals?  What are the implications of the election for Japan's relations with China and with the United States?  And what is the future of the DPJ and other opposition parties in Japan's new political landscape?

Hugh Patrick, director of CJEB, moderated this event.
