  • Programming Guidelines

    The guide below outlines how event organizers can best prepare their events to be part of the Phillips Pathway for Inclusive Leadership (PPIL). If you have questions or would like to request a consultation, please email ppil@gsb.columbia.edu.

    BEFORE Submitting Your Event

    Designing a PPIL Event

    • Consider your student audience- Full-Time MBA, Executive MBA, and/or MS students.
    • Understand the PPIL Student Learning Tracks to support in date selection/planning.
    • Select the 1 or 2 inclusive leadership skills your event will be focused.
    • Incorporate the Inclusive Leadership Skills-Sample Event Questions into your speaker agenda.

    Submission Guidelines

    • Event must be planned and led by a recognized CBS student organization, Centers, Programs, & Institutes, or Academic Division.
    • CBS Matters, Ask Me Anything, Treks, and Conferences will not be approved as PPIL events)

    Student Clubs- PPIL Grant Instructions

    Effective Fall 2026, selected student club events will be awarded up to $1,000 to support their PPIL programming. Students clubs can submit their events for consideration through the PPIL Event Submission Form.

    • Events must be submitted a minimum of FOUR (4) WEEKS ahead of event day to allow the PPIL Team to review your event, update your event status, and collaborate with you ahead of event day.
    • Events must be open to the entire CBS community.
    • Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis each semester.
    • Event specifically addresses tangible learning outcomes aligned with up to two (2) inclusive leadership skills.
      • Exploring Identity and Perspective Taking- Recognizing identity as it relates to oneself and others (i.e. culture, sexual orientation, religion, socio-economic status) and understanding how this affects and influences one’s worldview and perspective.
      • Understanding Bias and Prejudice- Recognizing the effects of bias (i.e. an inclination, favorable or unfavorable, toward something, usually considered unreasoned) and prejudice (i.e. the affective component of bias, which include negative feelings typically based on unsupported generalizations or stereotypes) on one’s perspective and society.
      • Engaging in Dialogue- Learning to communicate across differing perspectives to build a shared understanding of a topic or idea.
      • Addressing Inequities- Recognizing, defining, and dismantling the structures, procedures, and policies which perpetuate the unequal treatment of a category of people in relation to others.
      • Creating Inclusive Environments- Building environments in which members of any group can feel welcomed, respected, supported, and empowered to fully participate.
    • Event is co-curricular in nature, aligned with the curriculum but not being administered as part of a class or in exchange for class credit.
    • Event will be introduced as part of PPIL and will clearly communicate with participants what skills it will address.

    Event Considerations

    • Events are encouraged to accommodate as many participants as possible, but can be offered for a targeted audience including Full-Time MBA, Executive MBA, and/or MS Students
    • Organizers are encouraged to record the event in order to make it accessible to all participants to refer back to.
  • Attendance Tracking

    Once an event is "PPIL-Approved" and appears on the PPIL Events Calendar, your event will automatically be included in the weekly events newsletter sent to all-students every Monday. If event organizers have questions, please contact the PPIL Team at ppil@gsb.columbia.edu.

    Attendance Tracking

    In order for students to receive PPIL credit for attending your event, their attendance must be tracked and they must be "Checked-In" on CampusGroups accordingly. Once a student is "Checked-In", their PPIL attendance will automatically be updated on their student profile.
